Reading Notes: Blackfoot Unit, Part A
READING A:
Story Source: The Camp of the Ghosts which is a Blackfoot tale found in Blackfeet Indian Stories by George Bird Grinnell (1915)
- A deer and an antelope fight over who is the fastest
- in the first race the antelope wins
- in the second race the deer wins
- the two wives of a man plan to kill the husband for moving them to the middle of no where
- the husband fell into a hole and the two wives packed up and left him there to return to their previous village
- a bunch of wovles and other wildlife found the man and saved him
- he lived with them and learned their ways and eventually found his way back to the village where he told them what had happened
- a man and wife are married and have a son together but the wife gets sick and dies
- the man leaves his son with his mother and goes off to try and find his wife
- he found his way to the ghost country
- He found her eventually but lost her again in the end
- in this story thunder is a man, and he sometimes takes women
- a man and wife are sitting outside when thunder strikes and takes the wife
- So the man goes to the ravens asking for help in getting his wife back and they agree by giving him the tools and information that he needs
- the man goes to thunder and gets his wife's eyes back
- a traveling man lays his robe over a rock saying the rock may keep it
- but when it starts raining the man takes the robe back
- the rock got back at the man by chasing after him and his companion
- the rock rolled over his friend and crushed his hips
- the man yells for other animals to try and stop the rolling rock but they all die trying.
- finally the man is able to stop the rock by calling out to some birds that chip the rock into two pieces.
